In the original publisher's boards. Philip Dormer Stanhope was the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. He was a British statesman, man of letters and wit. The writings were originally published in 1774 under the title Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman. They provide perceptive and nuanced advice for how a gentlemen should interpret manners and social codes. With publisher's adverts to the rear of volume III dated March 1827.

Condition

In quarter cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the spines, particularly to the spine labels. Loss to the spine of all volumes at the spine labels which has been previously been repaired by the addition of the cloth. Front hinge to volume II is tender and may weaken, possibly detaching, with further handling. Hinges to volumes I and III are tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots to pages.
