These two volumes comprise the first series of 'Chronicles' which contain four stories total.
To the title page it is stated that this work is written by 'The author of 'Waverley'' which is known to be Sir Walter Scott. The first few novels from the Waverley series were printed anonymously. Scott publicly acknowledged his authorship of these works in 1827 with this work, with his name stated to the end of the introduction.
Complete in two volumes, bound with the half-titles. With publisher's adverts to the rear of volume I. A very smart set.
Condition
In contemporary half calf bindings. With marbled paper boards. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the boards and to the extremities. Gilt is fading to the spines. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Former owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Pages are bright with just the odd spot. Light tidemark to the preliminary leaves and half-title to volume II.
