Each volume in its own cloth chemise, in a fine condition, all held in a quarter morocco slipcase, in a very good condition.
Half-title present to each volume, uncommon to see the whole set with half-titles.
A classic historical fiction novel by Sir Walter Scott, part of his popular 'Waverley' series.
This novel is set just after the English Civil War in 1651, inspired by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock. Mainly this novel focuses on the escape of Charles II, and his eventual return to England in 1660.
Walter Scott is best known for his historical novels and poems, including 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe', and 'The Lady of the Lake'. 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel' was the first poem of his that brought him into the spotlight of the public's eye, establishing him as one of the most popular writers of his time.
Volume I is bound without the publisher's adverts.
Condition
In the original drab paper covered boards. Externally, front board of Volume I, rear board of Volume II, and both boards of Volume III are detached but present. Volume III is lacking the backstrip. Front board of Volume II is almost detached. Boards are rubbed with some marks. A little loss to the head and tail of the spine and to the rear joint of Volume I. Minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Final gathering of Volume III is detaching. Cloth chemises are fine. Light rubbing to the slipcase with marks to the bottom edge, in a very good condition.
