The first edition of this work. A very scarce copy, rarely seen in commerce, especially complete with both volumes. Fascinating study of manners, customs, and genealogical history of Great Britain compiled from wills written between the reign of Henry II and the accession of Queen Elizabeth to the throne.
Collated, complete with half titles. Vignette illustration to title page vols. I and II, with frontispiece vol. I only as called for. Many leaves unopened to top edge.
Written by Sir (Nicholas) Harris Nicolas, English antiquary in the nineteenth century. His most important work is 'History of the Orders of Knighthood of the British Empire; of the Order of the Guelphs; and of Medals, Clasps, &c., for Naval and Military Services' (1841–1842), which was the first attempt to write a general history of the British honours.
Condition
In the original publisher's uniform paper covered boards binding, with titles in black to spine labels. Externally a trifle rubbed with partial loss to back strip. Chipping with loss to title labels. Head of backstrip vol. I lifting, exposing chipped headband. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to fore edge affecting leaves throughout, especially first and last few.
