The very scarce first edition of this work from English geologist and surveyor Richard Cowling Taylor. A presentation copy, inscribed 'J. B. Plowman Esq, from the author' to the title page.

With six of the seven plates called for present, five of which are hand coloured. Plate number V 'An Enlarged Portion of the Original Section of the Cliff, North of Cromer', is absent.

An early work from this accomplished geologist, discussing the hypothesis presented in John Warden Robberds' 1826 publication 'Geological and Historical Observations on the Eastern Vallies of Norfolk', and the rising and falling of German ocean sea levels.

With the stamp of the Norfolk County Library to head of front free endpaper, and library markings to verso of title page. No further library markings.

Featuring detailed illustrations, this is a fascinating insight into early nineteenth century geological observations about the Norfolk coastline, engaging in a thorough dialogue with the popular scholarship of the day.

Rebound in half cloth, with paper covered boards. Shelf wear to back strip head and tail, and board perimeters. Library stamp to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Author's inscription to head of title page. Library markings to verso of title page. Pages bright, with scattered spotting throughout.
