What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding

A smart two volume edition of this medical work from Robert Burton, written under the name Democritus Junior, and first published in 1621.

A medical textbook on the subject of melancholia, Burton's work is written in a noticeably satirical tone in places, and expands from its stated intention to use melancholy as a lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinize. Burton's digressive style, often verging on the stream of consciousness, informs and animates the text.

With the engraved title page of the 1652 edition a further illustrated frontispiece to volume I, and an engraved title page in the style of the 1652 edition to volume II.

With the contemporary owner's bookplate of Rev. Forrest F Young to the front pastedown of each volume.

Condition

In tree calf bindings. Rebacked, with original back strips laid down, and retaining the original boards. Small losses to volume I back strip tail, and front board of volume II. Contemporary owner's bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with instances of spotting to volume I, and pages of volume II generally clean.
