First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

First thus, this is the first time these writings have been published together. Edited, with notes by the English antiquary and librarian, William Upcott. Upcott also edited the first edition of Evelyn's diary, which was published by William Bray in 1818. Upcott has written a lengthy introduction regarding John Evelyn's many achievements. Illustrated, with a facsimile frontispiece of Evelyn's writing, and a further three plates. Collated, complete. John Evelyn was an avid writer. His diary spanned the majority of his adult life, which covered several famous events from 1640 to 1706. Despite the entries not being daily, they are a useful contemporary source at a time where there were few regular magazines or newspapers. In the diary he includes the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's rise and death, the Great Plague and the subsequent Great Fire of London. Contemporaneously, Evelyn was known for his knowledge of trees. His 'Sylva' entered many editions during his lifetime. This work comprises of several tracts by Evelyn and translations by him, such as 'Of Liberty and Servitude' translated out of the French, 'The Golden Book of St John', 'Fumifugium, 'A Character of England', 'Navigation and Commerce', and 'Education of Children'.

Condition

In a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards and to the extremities. Small spill to the front joint and spine in places. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, W Simmington. Light offsetting to the front pastedown and to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Occasional scattered spots, mostly to the plates and the pages before and after.
