What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding

Evelyn is mostly known for his diaries or Memoirs, which are largely contemporaneous with those of the other noted diarist of the time, Samuel Pepys, and cast considerable light on the art, culture and politics of the time (he witnessed the deaths of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666). Over the years, Evelyn’s Diary has been over-shadowed by Pepys's chronicles of 17th-century life though they both portray very different aspects of these spectacular events. Dedicated to Charles Hampden Turner Esq. F.R.S with illustrations and includes a frontispiece of a facsimile of a letter written by Evelyn.

Condition

In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, there is wear to extremities, bumping and shelfwear. There is wear to the spine and slight loss to the back strip. The joints are worn but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound with some scattered foxing throughout, particularly on the first few pages, otherwise bright.
