Early Edition, Leather Binding

An early edition of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon complete in twelve volumes. 

Bound in half calf with marbled boards. 

A new edition. 

Gibbon's history of the Roman Empire was first published between 1776 and 1789 and is widely considered an incredibly influential and historically important work. It traces Western civilisation from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium in the fifteenth century. 

Illustrated with a monochrome plate frontispiece to Volume I of a portrait of Gibbon. Volume II and III have a large folding map. Collated, complete. 

All the spine labels are missing except for one to Volume II and one to Volume IV.

Condition

In half calf bindings and marbled boards. Externally, sound. All the spine labels are missing except for one to Volume II and one to Volume IV. There is significant rubbing to the spines and to the extremities. The front joints of Volumes VII, XII, and IX are starting to crack. The hinges are slightly strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with some light spots.
