Usually bound in multiple volumes, present here is a scarce single volume edition of the first half of Hume's impressive historical study, printed in double columns, and tracing the history of England from the Roman invasion to the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
Another single volume edition - also scarce - containing the second part of Hume's study, from 1688 to the death of George II, was also produced by the publisher, and is not present here.
With a portrait frontispiece, engraved title page, and ten further plates. Collated, complete.
Initially published in instalments between 1754 and 1761, Hume's work was initially greeted with outrage by all factions, while simultaneously becoming a best seller, with many considering it the standard history of England in his day.

In a full calf binding, with gilt detailing to back strip. Joint heads starting, with tail of rear joint also starting, and boards holding firm. Marks to boards. Amateur map illustration to recto of a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Significant spotting to plates. Light spotting throughout, with light tide marks to head of each leaf.
