The first series of Theodore Hook's entertaining short stories, this first series containing four novellas. 

Containing 'Danvers', 'The Friend of the Family', 'Merton', and 'Martha, the Gypsy'.

Written by Theodore Hook. Hook was a man of letters and composer, well known for his practical jokes, especially for the Berners Street hoax of 1810. Hook was also the recipient of the first ever postcard, which he probably sent to himself.

Condition

In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards and spines. Volumes I and III lacking the top spine labels. Minor bumping to the spines and extremities. Label to the tail of the spine of Volume I. Small chips to the spine labels of Volume II. A little discolouration and marks to the boards and spines. Offsetting of a previous bookplate to the endpaper of Volume II and III. internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Pages 203 to 206 of Volume I are working loose.
