William Godwin's philosophical history, in which he explores the Commonwealth of England, the political structure established after the deposition and execution of Charles I. Godwin explores the rule of Oliver Cromwell, his death, and then the Restoration of the monarchy.
This work is a reflection of his anarchist and libertarian beliefs, with his take on the government of the Commonwealth holding great influence on the student of late eighteenth century British political thought. Godwin reflects on the period of English history through the lens of his radical ideals.
Godwin was the father of Mary Shelley, and the husband of Mary Wollstonecraft.
