The first miniature edition of these volumes, in which all plates were reduced and re-engraved.

Consisting of: 'The Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque', illustrated with thirty-two hand coloured plates, including engraved hand coloured frontispiece and title page; 'The Second Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of Consolation', illustrated with twenty-three hand coloured plates, including engraved hand-coloured title page; 'The Third Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of a Wife' illustrated with twenty-six hand-coloured plates, including engraved hand coloured frontispiece and title page.

Collated, complete.

All plates are the work of Georgian artist and caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson.

With eighteen pages of advertisements to the rear of volume I, and four pages of advertisements each to the rear of volumes II and III.

The work of William Combe, a British writer best remembered today for these three works, which serve as a satire of the cleric William Gilpin.

Condition

Rebound in half calf, with cloth covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Front joint of volume III starting, with board firmly held. Otherwise, externally, excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot.
