An Important Work, Decorative Binding, Illustrated, Pleasing Copy

This classic work was a huge critical success, and is a significant landmark in the development of genre of biography. James Boswell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1740. A successful diarist and biographer, he is best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson. Samuel Johnson was a poet, essayist, literary critic and lexicographer. Born in 1709, Johnson was a committed Tory, and a devout Anglican. Frontispiece to volume I by Sir Joshua Reynold, engraved by E Mitchell. Previous owners bookplate to each volume, reads 'Abraham Bower'.

Condition

In half leather binding. Externally, very smart. Minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Small amount of loss to the head of volume III. Rubbing to the extremities, and to the front and rear boards of each volume. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the odd spot throughout.
