An Important Work, First Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

The first English edition of this work, published a year after the French edition. This work was issued as a part of Sir Richard Phillips and Co's 'Modern Voyages and Travels' series. As noted to the front board, this title is 'Part III vol VII'. With a folding frontispiece map and seventeen plates to the rear. Two of the plates to the rear are maps. There are extensive notes regarding these beautifully engraved plates to the start of the volume. Collated using the British library collation on copac, and plate descriptors at the start of the work, is complete with eighteen plates total. With an introduction by the editor, M Jomard. Jomard was a French cartographer and archaeologist. He edited many works on Egypt including 'Description de L'Egypte'. Frederic Cailliaud was a French naturalist, mineralogist and conchologist. This work regards his travels in Egypt, where he collected minerals and made several observations. This work provided information on Egypt that had never been seen by Western eyes before. It is an important work with regards to the development of knowledge of Egypt in the West. A scarce work, particularly in the original boards.

Condition

In the original paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Bumping and some light rubbing to the extremities. Small crack to the spine. Prior owner's inscription to the front board, Muntown. Loss to the head and tail of spine which has faded. Occasional marks to boards. Hinges are strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the front pastedown, dated 1822. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. The odd spots to pages.
