1822 Uriel: A Poetical Address To The Right Honourable Lord Byron
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce
With the even more scarce half title -because still in its original publishers' boards. Very scarce last seen at auction at Christies in 1982. The work was self-published by the author, and is remarkable in that it seeks to effect some sort of renunciation of sin in the peer. In the preface the anonymous author (who is identified as Thomas Jones de Powis) expresses his wish that "the all pervading Spirit of Light and Life may, by an irresistable energy, carry conviction into the heart of Lord Byron". There follows a series of religious poems, a eulogy for the recently decessed Princess Charlotte, notes on Byron's perceived religious errors in his poetry, and then a homily on Cain. The work is a remarkable and unique piece of evidence for the nature of the scandal that Lord Byron caused in British society. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist.
