What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

The very scarce first edition of Joseph Sutcliffe's study of the rock sediment of the river Avon, discussing also mineral deposits 'washed by its streams', and bound in a bright half morocco binding.

Illustrated for a portrait frontispiece of the author, best known for this work and his 1817 publication 'A Short Introduction to the Study of Geology'.

With the blind stamp of the Wigan Free Public Library to title page tail and following leaf, and no further library markings.

With an index, detailed appendix, and glossary of geological terms to the rear of the work.

A fascinating work from a self described 'Christian geologist', 'revolted by some parts of the Wernerian system', and providing personal insight into the tensions between science and faith that ruled the period.

Condition

Rebound in half morocco with marbled paper boards, and endpapers renewed. Externally, lovely. Internally, firmly bound. Library blind stamp to title page and following leaf. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot throughout, and marks to head of pages 24 and 25, not affecting the text. Occasional pencil notations to margins.
