Description
An Important Work, First Edition, Folding Maps, Folding Plates, Leather Binding
The first edition of this early nineteenth century geological study of England and Wales, the principal work of English geologist, palaeontologist and clergyman William Conybeare, adapted from a smaller work originally issued by mineralogist William Phillips, one of the founders of the Geological Society of London in 1807.
While the title page identified this as Part I, no further parts were ever published. This volume deals with the Carboniferous period and newer strata, and affords evidence throughout of the extensive and accurate knowledge possessed by Conybeare, ultimately exercising a marked influence on the progress of geology in Britain.
Illustrated with a folding plate displaying engravings of geological and mineralogical apparatus. The two further plates called for - a folding hand coloured map frontispiece, and hand coloured folding plan - are supplied in black and white facsimile only.
With a contemporary inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper identifying that no Part II was issued.
The first edition of this important and influential work in the history of the study of geology, which presented a synopsis of stratigraphical knowledge at the time unrivalled in detail and accuracy.
