Fielding was a popular English novelist of the eighteenth century, one of the founders of the traditional English novel alongside Samuel Richardson.
Though important in the literary world Fielding is also noted in the history of law enforcement, as he founded the Bow Street Runners, the first full-time police force in London.
'Tom Jones' is probably Fielding's best known work, a comical picaresque Bildungsroman originally published in 1749.

In a full diced calf binding. Externally, with some fading and wear to the spines and joints, resulting in a little loss to the head of the spine of Volumes I, III, VII, IX, and X, and to the tail of the spines of Volumes VI, IX, and X. Some rubbing and marks to the boards and spines. Light bumping to the extremities. Small damp stain to the rear joint of Volumes II, and III, larger damp stain to the rear board of Volume X. Small damp stain to the front joint of Volume IV. Larger mark to the head of the rear board of Volume IV, small tide mark to the head of the front board of Volume VI. Head of the spine of Volume VI is lifting. Front board of Volumes I and III is faded. Chip of leather to the front board of Volume VII, and to the rear board of Volume IX. Rear joint and rear hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Rear hinge of Volume IX is starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume X is weak, board held by two cords only. Crack to the front joint of Volume II. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper of Volumes I, III, IV, V, VII, IX, and X. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper of Volumes II, VI, and VIII. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, first and last few pages a little age-toned, and clean with some occasional spots mostly to the first and last few pages.
