1821 The Spirit of Despotism dedicated to Lord Castlereagh
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Illustrated, Scarce
The seventh edition of this work. With vignette illustration to title page by celebrated cartoonist George Cruikshank.
Satirical pamphlet concerned with politician and statesman Lord Castlereagh and despotism.
This pamphlet went through numerous editions within the same year.
Written and published by William Hone, English writer, satirist, and bookseller, known for his passionate fight for British press freedom. In 1817 he published 'Reformists' Register' to criticise state abuses, which he later attacked in the famous political squibs and parodies illustrated by Cruikshank. These publications caused him to be prosecuted numerous times: officially for their 'harmful to public morals;' but in reality due to his ridiculing of the habits and exposing of the corruption of those in power.
