What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Limited Edition, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

A scarce volume, a reprint limited to one hundred and fifty copies of this book containing essays on prisoners and prisons, originally published in 1618.

One of one hundred and fifty copies printed in 1821.

A fascinating work by Geffray Mynshul, illustrating life and people in prison in the seventeenth century.

With a facsimile of the original title page containing a woodcut attributed to the popular illustrator Thomas Bewick. His woodcuts always stood out due to his using of engraver's burin rather than tools such as knives, which allowed for a much more precise and delicate lines, and his using of wood's end grain rather than the softer side grain, which gave the illustrations better hardness and durability, which in return facilitated the care for the detail.

From the library of antiquary and collector Thomas Hugo.

Condition

In the original publisher's binding with paper covered boards. Externally sound with slight shelfwear and edge wear. Slight bumping to the extremities, and a minor loss to the head and tail of the spine. Antiquary Thomas Hugo's bookplate to the front pastedown, as well as as a small paragraph from a magazine on this volume. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting throughout, with pages being slightly age toned. Illustrated with a facsimile title page containing a woodcut attributed to Thomas Bewick.
