What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Leather Binding
The first edition of this work. Bound without the half-title and publisher's adverts. This poem was written by Southey as an attack on Lord Byron and his fellow modern poets. Southey calls the poets the 'Satanic School', as they had overwhelming pride, and audacious impiety which offended Southey. Southey's poem was written on the death of King George III, depicting George entering heaven. Byron replied to Southey with another satirical poem, in which he depicts a dispute in heaven over George's soul. Robert Southey was a Romantic poet, and one of the Lake Poets alongside Wordsworth and Coleridge. He was the Poet Laureate for thirty years, and supposedly coined the term 'zombie'. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of Edward Strutt the 1st Baron Belper, a Liberal Party politician and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
