'The Monastery' is a historical novel set in the Elizabethan era in England.

The novel is focused on the monastery of Kennaquhair, at a time when the Scottish Reformation is just beginning, meaning the monastery is in peril.

Walter Scott is best known for his historical novels and poems, including 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe', and 'The Lady of the Lake'. 'The Lay of the Last Minstrel' was the first poem of his that brought him into the spotlight of the public's eye, establishing him as one of the most popular writers of his time.

With the issue points; page 263 of Volume I is correctly numbered; "attention" in the last line of page 226 of Volume I, rather than the alternative 'attentoin' sometimes seen; 'Chapter II' stated to the head of both pages 26 and 63 of Volume II, and 'Chapter III' stated to the head of both pages 89 and 123 of Volume II.
