In charming red morocco bindings and in a pocket-sized format. The new edition of these works. Forty-nine of the original fifty volume set only. Lacking volume XXII which contains The Old English Baron, a Gothic Story by Clara Reeve and The Old English Baron by Horace Walpole. Edited by Anna Laetitia Barbauld, a prominent English poet, essayist, literary critic and editor. Her British Novelists series was first published in 1810 with a large introductory essay by Barbauld. This work has been regarded as a canon making enterprise by McCarthy and Kraft. Novels to this series include, but are not limited to, Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, Henry Fielding's The History of Tom Jones, and Cecila by Fanny Burney.
Condition
In full straight grained morocco bindings. Gilt stamping to the spine and board edges. All edges are gilt. Externally, smart. All volumes have a small amount of light rubbing to the head and tail of spines and to the extremities. Spines have faded slightly. Occasional marks to boards. Front hinge to volume I is slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges. Endpapers and title page to volume 25 are very slightly creased. Instances of spotting to the first and last few pages. The occasional spots throughout. Spotting is slightly heavier to volume 20.
