Description

Fine Binding, Very Scarce

This is a guide setting out the duties of women in society according to Anglican beliefs, written at the turn of the nineteenth century. Written by Thomas Gisborne (1758-1846), an Anglican priest, poet and abolitionist. He had published a similar book addressed to men in 1794, titled 'An Enquiry into the Duties of Men in the Higher and Middle Classes of Society'. 

This is a twelfth edition. 

In a stunning binding with a gilt spine and borders, an intricate stamped designs to the boards, and marbled endpapers.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally very smart, some fading to the spine and very minor shelf wear to the extremities and chipping to the head of the spine. Inscription on the reverse of the front endpaper dated Christmas 1824. Internally firmly bound, pages generally bright and clean, some slight spotting heavier to the endpapers. A small tear of 2cm to the top of one of the front page blanks.
