What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding, Original Binding

Volumes II and III only of a three volume set. The second edition, corrected.

Reverend Henry Francis Cary was a British author and translator best known for this blank verse translation of Dante Alighieri's 'Divine Comedy'.

Cary's famous translation has long been considered the first modern rendering of Dante's epic into English. Cary was influenced in the style of the translation by the Romantics, and by Coleridge in particular. Though the text was finished in mid-1812, Cary was unable to secure a publisher and ultimately published the work at his own expense. It at first excited little attention, but it came under great notice primarily because of the applause awarded to the translation by Coleridge.
