Complete as seven parts bound in two.

The second edition, with the first part dated 1819 and the last six 1820, and with the printer's address given as 'Greenwich Street' to the title pages without a hyphen. Parts I and II are paginated continuously, all other parts paginated separately. 8 dots above the date in Part I, not complying with the issue point to page 240 in Part III. The note in Part I is mispaginated as page 94. 'Examine' to part II page 107 line 5.  'To Windsor Castle' to Part III page 5 line 2. 'Like yourself in old' Part IV page 12 line 15. 'They recall the pictures my fancy' Part V page 5. Last line to Part VI page 38 begins 'order'. 'Notes, Piling' Part VII page 21 line 20. 

A serialised collection of short stories and essays by Washington Irving, include his two best known stories, 'Rip Van Winkle', present in Part I, and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow', present in Part II. 

This was among the first works of American literature that gained popularity in Europe and Britain. 

Other stories include a romantic tale of James I of Scotland falling in love, a sentimental story in which a new wife tells her impoverished husband that money can't buy happiness, a description of English countryside and characters, a tribute to the life and work of William Roscoe, and more.

Condition

In the original calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards and spine. Spines and extremities are faded. Small cracks to the head of the front joints. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean and a few very occasional spots. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page of Part I and to a half title in Part V.
