Description

First Edition, Signed

With the inscription to the half title, 'The Lord Viscount Gage with Lt General Thornton's Compliments'. The first edition of this work, which explores Thornton's view on Roman Catholicism and the doctrine of transubstantiation. Thornton voted for the Catholic relief bill of May 1813 which allowed Irish Roman Catholics to be elected to all corporations. However, following this vote he developed a vocal interest in transubstantiation and spoke publicly on numerous occasions. This speech regards his motion to repeal the declarations against the belief of transubstantiation. Transubstantiation is a conversion of the Eucharistic elements into the body and blood of Christ whilst their appearance still remains bread and wine.
