Alfred Russel Wallace was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer and botanist. He independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection. His paper was jointly published with some of Charles Darwin's writings in 1858 which prompted Darwin to publish 'On the Origin of Species'.

This work is a sequel to Wallace's 'The Geographic Distribution of Animals'. To the first part there are chapters on the elementary facts of distribution, evolution as a key to distribution, the powers of dispersal of animals and plants, changes of climate which have influenced the dispersal of organisms, and ancient glacial epochs, and milt climates in the arctic regions. To the second part there are chapters on insular faunas and floras in the Oceanic Islands, the Galapagos, St Helena, Borneo and Java, as well as Japan and Formosa.
