With thirty-three plates total, comprising thirty one hand coloured engraved plates after W Hollar and two engraved portraits.
Holbein's emblem book was first published in 1538 and was regarded as a triumph of Renaissance woodblock printing. It demonstrates Death's intrusion on the lives of thirty-four people who are at different levels of society.
Condition
In a full straight grain morocco binding. Externally, the front board is detached but present. Light rubbing to the spine and joints. Rear hinge has been professionally repaired. Internally, firmly bound. Very light tidemark to the page edges. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to pages.
