With the pedigrees of many of the nobility and gentry extracted from records, original evidences, and manuscripts. Includes a catalogue of the author's museum and manuscripts. Written by Ralph Thoresby, an English antiquarian who was born in Leeds and is widely credited with being the first historian of that city. He is remembered as a merchant, nonconformist, fellow of the Royal Society, diarist, author, common-councilman in the Corporation of Leeds, and museum keeper. With notes and additions from Thomas Dunham Whitaker, an English clergyman and topographer. Loidis and Elmete; Or, an Attempt to Illustrate the Districts Described in Those Words by Bede; and Supposed to Embrace the Lower Portions of Aredale and Wharfdale, Together with the Entire Vale of Calder in the County of York, 1816. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, forty-six plates, and many vignettes. Collated complete. An account of the districts of Aredale, Wharfdale, and Calder, supposed to be included by Bede under the names of Loidis and Elmete. Condition

Bound in full calf. Externally, worn with boards detached but present. Rubbing to the extremities resulting in minor loss with light fading to the spine. The odd mark to the boards. Cracks to the spine with loss. Internally, generally firmly bound with endpapers detached but present and the first few pages of volume one loosening. Pages are bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the extremities.
