The very scarce first edition of this work.
Though the title page stated 'Volume I.', no further volumes were ever produced.
Arranged according to the Linnean system, this is a fascinating study of conches by English surgeon, zoologist and entomologist William Wood, an expert on Mollusca.
Illustrated with sixty hand coloured plates. Collated, complete.
Retaining the original half title.
In a lovely straight grain morocco binding, with gilt detailing.
With two former owner's inscriptions to a front blank, one dated 1834 and the other giving the name of John Calcy, dated 1815.
A beautifully illustrated and very scarce work.
Condition
In a full straight grain morocco binding, with gilt detailing. Small area of rubbing towards back strip tail, otherwise externally excellent. Head and tail of rear hinge strained, but firmly held. Inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright, with only the odd spot to page perimeters.
