First published in 1806, this is the 1814 fourth edition of a work that is very scarce in all editions.
The work of English journalist, political philosopher and novelist William Godwin, who is viewed as the first modern proponent of anarchism. He was the husband of Mary Wollestonecraft, and the father of Mary Wollestonecraft Shelley. He authored this work under a pseudonym.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and ten further plates. Collated, complete.
With the contemporary inscription of Charles Edward Slocock to the recto of the frontispiece.
Rebacked, with endpapers renewed. Inscription 'this book cost 5/6' to the front pastedown.
Godwin discusses the Greek and Roman gods 'for the use of schools, and young persons of both sexes'.
Condition
Rebacked in morocco, retaining the original calf boards. Endpapers renewed. Externally, smart, with board corners renewed with morocco. Rear hinge strained, but firmly held. Front pastedown cut away to head to reveal contemporary price to head of board. Internally, generally firmly bound. Inscription to recto of frontispiece. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd handling mark.
