What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound

A lovely copy of this early nineteenth century study of Salisbury Cathedral - formally the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary - from English antiquary, topographer, author and editor John Britton.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, illustrated title page and thirty further plates. Collated, complete.

With the publisher's original paper label to the front pastedown.

The first edition of this work, in which Britton discusses the construction, architecture and history of the Cathedral, from the origins of the Salisbury diocese and laying of the first foundations, to the present day, and a discussion of those whose tombs rest within the Cathedral's confines.

Britton was a prolific writer on topics such as this, however was later lampooned for his inaccuracies by Richard Harris Barham, writing under the name Thomas Ingoldsby, in two mock-antique ballads entitled 'Relics of Antient Poetry'.

From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the ‘Journal of Architecture’.
