A two-volume work in full morocco bindings, with blind stamping and gilt detailing to the boards and squares.
Bookplate of Edward Parker, of Browsholme Hall, to the front paste down of each volume.
Volume I is illustrated with an engraved title page, but is lacking the printed title page with its vignette, and 47 plates. Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece, a title page vignette and 45 plates. Collated, complete except for the printed title page to Volume I.
Scott's fascinating topographical work focusing on the borders of England and Scotland, detailing their extensive antiquities and history. The work perfectly expresses Scott's fascination with Scottish history, a love of his which is reflected further in his influential historical fiction.
Undated, dated from copies held at the University of Leicester Library and University of Exeter Library.
Condition
In full morocco bindings. Externally sound, though rubbed to the boards, spines and extremities. Gilt remains bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, except for offsetting to the plates and to the leaves facing the plates.
