What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Leather Binding, Pleasing Copy, Rebound, Uncommon

Madame de Stael explores German culture in these excellent three volumes, in particular German Romanticism. She wanted to promote Romanticism in France and other parts of Europe; these books have indeed had a major impact on Romanticism in France and elsewhere.

The second French edition, published in 1813 in London after the first edition of ten thousand copies of 1810 printed in Paris was destroyed by Napoleon's orders. The Napoleonic era preferred Christian and medieval culture over thinkers such as Schlegel, who were thought of as a threat to the established orders.

In three parts: 'De l'Allemagne et des Moeurs des Allemands,' 'La Litterature et les Arts,' and 'La Philosophie et la Morale.' Exploring German culture and philosophy, celebrating authors such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, and Friedrich Schiller.
