The first edition of this work. The publisher's advertisement explains that this volume was edited by Henry William Weber, and that 'the manuscript, from which this work is printed, is in the possession of the Marchioness of Stafford'.

The work of Scottish politician and courtier Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun, known as the historian of the noble house of Sutherland. This work details the genealogical history of that house until the year 1630. Also present is Gilbert Gordon of Sallach's contemporary continuation of the original manuscript, updating the genealogy to the year 1651. With remnants of a former owner's inscription, dated 1890, to the head of the title page.

Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, vignette title page illustration, plate depicting the 'Armorial Bearings of the Earls if Sutherland' and double page facsimile of a page from the original manuscript.

Condition

In the original calf binding. Bumping to extremities, with losses to the leather in these locations. Leather lifting from head of rear board. Contemporary repair to rear joint. Rear hinge starting, but holding firm. Rubbing to front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Former owner's inscription to head of title page. Three leaves of index to rear detached from binding. Pages generally bright and clean. Occasional pencil notations to margins.
