What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, First Edition, Leather Binding
Thirteen works bound in five volumes, including later issues of first editions of six works.
A wonderful collection of works from one the most famous poets in the English language, also one of the most famous figures in British history, notorious for his controversial life.
The first volume present here contains the 1812 fifth edition of 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage', featuring cantos I and II, alongside twenty further poems. With an appendix to the rear.
The second volume present here consists of four works bound together, each retaining the original title page:
The 1814 ninth edition of 'The Giaour'.
The 1813 fifth edition of 'The Bride of Abydos'
The 1814 second edition of 'The Corsair'. Retaining the original half title.
The 1814 third edition of 'Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte'. Retaining the original half title.
There are five works in the third volume:
The 1814 fourth edition of 'Lara, A Tale'.
The very scarce 1816 first Rodwell and Martin edition of 'Fare Thee Well'. Randolph notes this was first published privately, with only fifty copies produced. This is one of a number of early editions published in the same year.
Canto III of 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage', 1816. The first edition, second issue, first variant. Randolph page 59.
The 1816 first edition of 'The Prisoner of Chillon'. State unidentified, as this is lacking the final leaf with publisher's imprint, which decides state. There is some debate as to priority of state. Randolph page 61. Also lacking half title.
The 1817 first edition of 'Manfred'. First edition, third issue. Page 76 blank. Hamlet quotation to title page. Randolph, page 64. Lacking the half title.
With two works in the fourth volume:
Canto IV of 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage', 1818. The first edition, second issue, with the new paragraph of seven lines to page 160, 'Esortazione' to the final line of page 155.
The first edition, second issue of 'Mazeppa', 1819. With publisher's imprint to [71], and advertisement to page 71. Lacking the eight pages of advertisements to the rear. This issue contains the first appearance of Byron's 'A Fragment' (pp 59-69), a vampire tale written as part of the ghost story contest that led to 'Frankenstein'. Lacking the half title.
The final volume contains the 1821 first edition of 'Marino Faliero'. The first edition, second issue, variant A. The scarcer of the two variant of the second issue. Lacking the half title.
Bookplate of George Gunning of Horton to the front pastedown of first and third volumes. Sir George Gunning, 2nd Baronet (1763–1823), of Horton, Northamptonshire, was an English MP.
