Complete in two volumes. A collection of the popular works of William Hogarth, including his influential work 'Analysis of Beauty'. 'The Analysis of Beauty' is an artistic work, describing Hogarth's theories on visual beauty and grace. One of the most famous theories in this work is the 'Line of Beauty', and s-shaped curved line, that supposedly excited the attention of the viewer, evoking liveliness and movement. Hogarth was an English painter and printmaker, known for his social satire cartoons. He is best known for his series 'A Harlot's Progress', 'A Rake's Progress', and 'Marriage A-la-Mode'. Volume I illustrated with a vignette title page, and fifty-three plates. Plates 27, 37, and 38 are misbound, and are bound in Volume II. Volume II illustrated with a vignette title page, and thirty-three plates, and three additional plates numbered 27, 37, and 38, that were supposed to be bound in Volume I. Collated, complete. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. An account of Hogarth's life prefixed, by Thomas Clerk. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Edmund Whitelock Reeves'.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the boards and spines. A small amount of loss to the head of the spines. Bumping to the extremities. Light cracks to the joints. Front hinges are starting but firm. Rear hinges are strained but remain firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Tape repair to the reverse of the plate facing page 54 in Volume I. Small tidemark to the vignette title of Volume I.
