Description

Folding Maps, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

Three very scarce early nineteenth century works bound together.

The first work is an 1816 edition of William Smith's translation of Xenophon's 'History of the Affairs of Greece', with a folding map frontispiece.

The second work is and 1812 edition of Edward Spelman's translation of Xenophon's history of 'The Expedition of Cyrus into Persia'. Illustrated with a folding map frontispiece.

The third work is Mr. Rooke's 1812 translation of Arrian's account of Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia.

With the library bookplate of Repton School to the front pastedown, and their stamp to the title page of the first work.

Two fascinating historical narratives by the Greek military leader, philosopher, and historian, who was elected commander of one of the biggest Greek mercenary armies of the Achaemenid Empire.

For over two millennia, Xenophon's diverse talents fuelled the debate of whether to place him amongst history's greatest generals, historians or philosophers.
