Illustrated, Leather Binding

Complete in three volumes. A collection of the letters written by Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, to his illegitimate son Philip Stanhope. The collection comprises of a thirty year correspondence containing more than four hundred letters, written between 1737 to 1768, when the son died. The letters discuss the ideals of gentlemen, as well as classical literature, history, geography, politics, and diplomacy. Illustrated with a frontispiece and vignette title to each volume. Philip Stanhope was a British statesman and man of letters, an acclaimed wit during his life. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'T. M. Reed'.

Condition

In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Some light rubbing to the boards and spines. Joints are a little cracked. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Front hinge of Volumes I and III are starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'T. M. Reed'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Tidemark to the frontispiece and vignette title of Volumes II and III. Small closed tear to the half-title of Volume II.
