An Important Work, Leather Binding
This was Beattie's most important work, and spoke out against the recent works by David Hume, causing controversy. It was first published in 1770, and was approved of by the likes of Samuel Johnson and Edmund Burke. It also led to the author's audience with the King of England, and an LL.D. from the University of Oxford.
James Beattie (1735-1803) was a Scottish philosopher, poet and co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Condition
In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally a trifle worn, with all leather corners lost and some slight wear to the head of the front joint and spine. Lacking a front endpaper. Ownership inscription to the title page. Internally, generally firmly bound, with the front hinge a little strained. Pages are a little age-toned.
