Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding

1810 edition, being the first and only edition printed 'by and for W. Davison'.

The edition of this work was published on behalf of William Davison (1781-1858) a printer, bookbinder, and bookseller who owned a circulating library. This is one of several volumes on natural history that he printed and produced in his lifetime.

Two volumes bound into one volume, in a full-morocco binding.

Illustrated with a frontispiece, over one-hundred illustrated plates, and one folding table.

The title of this work borrows from Oliver Goldsmith's' 'An History of the Earth and Animated Nature' (1774), and aims to inform 'those, who without having leisure to devote themselves wholly to.... science, would not wish to be totally uninformed of the works of nature'.

Vol I includes chapters such as 'Of the Earth', 'Winds, regular and Irregular', 'Analogies between animals and Vegetables', and Of the Apparent varieties in the Human species'.

Vol II includes chapters on subjects like 'History of Birds', followed by numerous different species, as well as 'History of Shell Fishes', 'Of Reptiles', 'and 'Of Insects'.

With contributions from individuals such as Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774), the Anglo-Irish Novelist, and Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), the French naturalist and encyclopedist.
