A very scarce first edition. Rebound in half calf with gilt detail to the spine. Published anonymously although accredited to William Greenfield. A collection of published essays from Greenfield's lectures at the University of Edinburgh, regarding to the emotional responses to literature. With numerous sections including melancholy, improvement of taste, improvement of imagination and beauty.
Condition
In half calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. A few marks to the boards. Marks to the front paste-down where a bookplate has been torn off. Age-toning to the edges of the paste-downs and free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with some age-toning to the edges. Spotting throughout, heavier towards the front. A few marks towards the front pages.
