An early set of Sterne's collected works, featuring illustrations by Thomas Stothard and John Thurston. Stothard's illustrations first appeared in a ten volumes in 1798 by Cadell & Davies; his marbled leaf appears in volume I. Thurston's illustrations first appeared in an 1802 edition.
Featuring two of Sterne's best known works - 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman' and 'A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy' - alongside his sermons, and other shorter works.
With half titles to each volume.
With a Chelsea Book Club label to the tail of each front pastedown.
Condition
In a full calf binding. Rubbing to spines, with minor losses of leather to back strips, with further losses to the front joint of volume I. Minor losses of leather to back strip head and tails. Heads and tails of joints of volumes I and II, head of front joint of volume III, and rear joint of volume IV all starting, with boards firmly held. Booksellers labels to tail of front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot.
