The first edition of this scarce work.

Half-title is present. 

Inscribed by the Lord Lonsdale to the head of the half-title 'To Lord Redesdale - with Lord Lonsdale's compliments; Janr23rd 1808'. This Lord Lonsdale was William Lowther, the 1st Earl of Lonsdale, a descendent of the author of the memoir. He is best remembered for building the castellated mansion Lowther Castle.
 
Lord Redesdale's ink inscription to the title page. John Freeman-Mitford, the 1st Baron Redesdale, was a lawyer and politician. He married the sister of the Prime Minister Spencer Perceval. He is a distant relative of the Mitford sisters.

An interesting and concise account of the reign of King James II, the memoir of John Lowther, the 1st Viscount Lonsdale.

This focused memoir looks at England from the accession of James II in 1685 to the landing of the Prince of Orange at Torbay in 1688 and the Glorious Revolution.

Edited by William Lowther, the 1st Earl of Lonsdale, who inscribed this volume, who was a cousin of the author.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, with some rubbing to the boards and spine. Joints are starting, hinges are strained. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is a little worn. Old repair to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some occasional spots. Editor's inscription to the half-title, prior owner's ink inscription to the title page.
