The vanishingly scarce first edition. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. A social science book by Hugh Murray exploring the character of nations and the progress of society. With sections on family life, wars, free nations and religion. Hugh Murray was a Scottish geographer and author. He was editor of the Scots Magazine, and featured in 'John Paterson's Mare', the satire on the Edinburgh publishing scene. Murray wrote numerous books regarding geography and travel. This is one of his only two philosophical treatises published. A scarce and important work in the history of anthropological thought. Sabin 51503.

Condition

In half calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Shelf wear to the edges. Marks and offsetting to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. A few scattered spots to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Pages age-toned but generally bright and clean. Spotting towards the front and rear of the book.
