Creator of the hexameter verses and iambic poetry, Horace was a leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus, his odes regarded as some of the most valuable Latin lyrics.
This work includes five books of odes, the secular poem, two books of satires, two books of epistles, and 'The Art of Poetry'. To which is prefixed a biographical sketch of the translator. Translated by Philip Francis.
Originally published from 23BC, the famous odes were developed as an imitation of the short lyric poetry of Greek poets such as Pindar, Sappho, and Alcaeus, and concern a range of subjects including love, friendship, wine, religion, morality, and more.
Condition
Rebound in full calf with gilt tooling to spine and boards, marbled endpapers. Externally generally sound with shelf wear, rubbed to joints, spine and extremities of boards, chipped to tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean.
