What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding

Written by antiquary Francis Douce (1757-1834). This work caused a stir upon its publication, with erroneous interpretations and misled criticisms; a poor review of it was printed in the Edinburgh Review, causing the author to choose to not undertake any publications following, except for papers in Archaeologia and The Gentleman's Magazine.

Illustrated with engravings on wood throughout the text by J. Berryman.

Complete in two volumes.

A first edition of this work.

An interesting and contentious critique of Shakespeare's writings.

Condition

In a contemporary calf binding. Externally generally smart; spines have some slight loss along the joints, with gilt spines a little rubbed and some loss to the tail of volume I. Internally, generally firmly bound. Both hinges to volume I are strained but still firm. Pages are bright and clean, with just a little spotting opposing illustrations.
