With chapters on the origin and progress of the stage, principle causes owed to the success of the stage, the character of the stage as drawn by historians, philosophers, legislators and divines, and the stage as an amusement only.

A fantastic early work on the philosophy of theatre. 

With errata to the contents page. To the rear is a list of other works by the author John Styles. Works include 'An Essay on Toleration', 'a Sermon on the Death of Lord Nelson', and 'A Sermon on the Spirituality of the Divine Essence'. Styles also wrote o nanimal rights. 

John Styles was a Nonconformist minister in Brighton and Brixton.

In a recent full cloth binding. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. A few handling marks to the title page. Minor chips to extremities. Occasional light spots.
